How to Prepare for Your HyCoSy Procedure?
Timing Your Appointment:
HyCoSy should be performed during the follicular phase of your menstrual cycle, ideally between days 7-12 of your cycle. This timing provides the best visualization of the uterus and fallopian tubes and confirms you are not pregnant.
Abstinence from Intercourse:
It is critical that you abstain from sexual intercourse from day 1 of your period until after your HyCoSy procedure is completed. This ensures you are not pregnant at the time of the procedure and reduces infection risk.

How is the HyCoSy Procedure Performed?
Understanding what to expect during your procedure can help you feel more confident and comfortable. Here’s a step-by-step overview:
Step 1: Patient Positioning
You will lie on an examination bed and be covered with a drape sheet for privacy and comfort. Your legs will be positioned in stirrups, similar to a gynecological exam.
Step 2: Speculum Insertion
A speculum will be gently inserted into the vagina to visualize the cervix. This allows the sonographer clear access to the cervical opening.
Step 3: Catheter Placement
A thin plastic catheter is carefully passed through the cervix into the uterus. This catheter will deliver the contrast fluid during the procedure.
Step 4: Transvaginal Ultrasound
The speculum is then removed, and a transvaginal ultrasound probe is inserted into the vagina. This probe provides detailed, high-resolution images of the uterus and fallopian tubes from within.
Step 5: Contrast Administration
Sterile saline solution is slowly injected through the catheter into the uterine cavity. As the fluid fills the uterus and enters the fallopian tubes, the sonographer observes the images in real time on the ultrasound monitor.
Step 6: Tubal Assessment
If the fallopian tubes are open and patent, the saline fluid will flow freely through them and spill into the peritoneal cavity. This confirms tubal patency and normal function. The sonographer documents all findings for your fertility specialist.

No. It is essential that you are not pregnant when HyCoSy is performed. Abstain from intercourse from day 1 of your period until after the procedure.
HyCoSy is very effective at determining if tubes are open (patent). However, it may not detect all types of tubal damage or blockage. If results are inconclusive, your fertility specialist may recommend additional testing.
No. HyCoSy is diagnostic only and does not affect fertility. Some studies suggest fertility may even temporarily improve in the months following HyCoSy due to the flushing action of the saline.
